Reasonable Costs
TUITION & FEES
The National Health Service
Corps Scholarship Program
(NHSC SP) pays tuition and
required fees directly to the
educational institution.
The NHSC SP will only pay
tuition and fees for required
courses in summer school
sessions when summer school
is an academic term normally
required by the school for all
students in the same program.
The NHSC SP does not pay
tuition and fees for repeated
coursework.
The NHSC SP tuition payments
are not taxable. Please see
your tax advisor for more
information.
The NHSC SP will pay invoices
for tuition and fees if you
remain in good standing
with the school as a full-
time student. You must
maintain full-time
enrollment in the academic
program for which we
awarded you the
scholarship, and also
maintain good academic
standing as defined by the
institution’s academic
policies.
Payment for increases in
tuition or required fees that
are provided by the school
after the award amount is
determined each school year
is not guaranteed and will be
subject to the availability of
funds.

ELIGIBLE/INELIGIBLE TUITION & FEES LIST
The NHSC SP will pay tuition and fees for each academic term that you complete within
the academic year.

STIPEND
During each school year, you will receive a monthly stipend, with an amount
calculated before Federal taxes.
For new students only, we will deposit stipend payments for July-October
into your bank account in a lump sum payment no later than the first week
of November.
After the initial lump sum payment, we issue stipend payments directly to
your bank account at the end of each month.
Stipend payments are taxable.
Receipt of the stipend payment does not mean that the federal government employs
you, nor will you receive any of the benefits available to federal employees.
NHSC SP TAX INFORMATION
A. Only the stipend portion of the scholarship award is subject to federal tax.
B. We will request that you submit IRS Form W-4.
C. We will use the information you provided on the W-4 form to determine federal tax
withholding on the stipend portion of the scholarship.
D. State and local income taxes will not be withheld. We advise you to consult your
local tax authority regarding state or local taxes for which you may be liable.
E. It is your responsibility to arrange for the payment of any additional federal, state,
and local taxes that you may owe.
F. Each year, you will receive a W-2 tax form for the amounts paid for the stipend.

OTHER REASONABLE COSTS (ORC)
The ORC is an additional, annual, one-time payment we provide to each NHSC Scholar
to pay other reasonable educational expenses or costs you may incur such as books,
uniforms, travel etc. **The ORC payment will be paid with the first stipend
payment no later than the first week of November. We pay all stipend and
Other Reasonable Cost payments directly to your checking or savings account
through direct deposit.
We provide ORC to cover expenses not covered under tuition and fees:
Books
Clinical supplies
Laboratory supplies
Instruments
Student Health Insurance
School ID cards/ID fees
Uniforms
Computer/PDA rental or purchase (only if required of all students)
Travel expenses for one clinical rotation during school
