"You Can Run, But You Can't Hide: What Big Tech Knows
About You, Why They Want to Know It, How They Get It,
and What They Do With It" is the chilling title. Facebook,
Google, Amazon, and all the others - we know they
collect data about us. But what exactly do they collect?
Why do they collect it? How can we control it? In the 21st
century, we have lost much of our privacy, and we have
lost it voluntarily. We don't HAVE to give these companies
information, but we do so voluntarily to use their
products. What is the cost to us? Should we be afraid? We
will investigate what's behind the scenes using clips from
the excellent Netix lm, "The Social Dilemma," and try to
answer some of these questions.

The sauce was an instant hit with Joanne! After dinner,
Joanne sat with Rita to translate the ingredients (Rita did
not speak English) and wrote down the recipe. To this day,
Joanne still has the handwritten recipe and may reference
it when she is making "Cousin Rita's meat sauce." This is
one sauce that is usually made by Joanne and not me in
our home. Even when I make the meat sauce it is per
Cousin Rita's recipe. Come, learn, and taste it!

descendants of Africans enslaved on the rice, indigo, and
Sea Island cotton plantations of the lower Atlantic coast.
Many came from the rice-growing region of West Africa.

coastal plantations created a unique and beautiful culture
with deep African retentions that are clearly visible in the
Gullah Geechee people's distinctive arts, crafts, foodways,
music, language, and spirituality.

HIS111: A MORE PERFECT UNION CREATING
THE AMERICAN REPUBLIC
4 Sessions | Tuesday | Sep 26, Oct 03, Oct 10, Oct 17
10AM-12N | In-Person only | Beaufort campus
The American experiment in nationhood declared itself to
be a novus ordo saeclorum (a "new order of the ages").
The path from a Declaration of Independence to a
constitutional republic proved not only experimental but
also hazardous. This course will explore the events of the
so-called "critical period" of American history (1781-1789)
with a specic focus on several essays from "The Feder-
alist Papers" through which we may trace the ways in
which the founders' thinking about less imperfect (if not
more perfect) forms of government led to the ratication
of the Constitution.

HIS112: THE FIRST AFRICANS
TO VIRGINIA 1619-1699
1 Session | Thursday | Oct 05 | 10AM-12N
Zoom, OLLI Digital Library
In this lesson, Historic Jamestown public historian Mark
Summers will examine the arrival of enslaved Africans to
Virginia in 1619. The events surrounding their capture
and sale were covered up as slavery was against English
law at the time. The lecture will examine the documen-
tation, the concept of race in England, events in Angola
leading to their capture and the passing of ocial slave
laws in 1662. Mr. Summers will also discuss the
relationship between Africans and indentured Europeans
and how their once unity was broken with the creation of
a color line leading in many ways to the origins of the
American South and its racial caste system at one time.
MARK SUMMERS works as Director of Youth Public Programs
at Preservation Virginia, which is a private non-prot

graduated from the University of Mississippi and is currently

HIS115: RECONSTRUCTION: THE SECOND
AMERICAN FOUNDING AND ITS LEGACIES
1 Session | Friday | Oct 13 | 10-11:30AM
In-Person, OLLI Digital Library | Bluton campus
Come explore the rise and fall of Reconstruction, the
period roughly 150 years ago when radical Republicans
launched the greatest expansion of democracy in
American history, extending civil and political rights to
millions of formerly enslaved African Americans. Then, in
the late 19th century, the Reconstruction political order
was destroyed. Multiracial democracy was rolled back in
the South and replaced by a racial caste system that
would endure into the 1950s and beyond. At a time when
the fate of democracy seems to be at stake once again,
we will also consider what lessons the history of
Reconstruction holds for Americans in our own time.

realizing materials for a creative design existed in one's own
backyard, a neighbor's yard (ask rst), or on the side of the

FOLIO - AND THE WOMEN WE MAY HAVE LOST
1 Session | Wednesday | Oct 11 | 3-4:30PM
In-Person, OLLI Digital Library | Bluton campus
In 1623, Shakespeare's two partners, John Heminges and
Henry Condell, took Shakespeare's plays to a printer. The
result was what has become known as the "First Folio."
The "First Folio" contained virtually all the plays
Shakespeare had written, but many of those plays had
not previously appeared in print. What would have been
lost if Shakespeare's two buddies had not sought out the
printer? And which of Shakespeare's incredible women
might never have been known in the absence of the "First
Folio," celebrating its 400th anniversary in 2023? Mr.
Jordan will illuminate all these issues in his engaging
theatrical presentation.
MARK JORDAN has taught Shakespeare at
several California universities. He has performed
in over 20 of Shakespeare's plays and has trained

and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He has

Renaissance to the 20th century. The goals of this course
are to simplify the often-obscure presentation of modern
philosophic ideas and to illustrate how these ideas have
had a profound eect on Western culture. This course
does not require any formal training in philosophy.

PHI102: WESTERN PHILOSOPHY AN
INTRODUCTION TO THE PHILOSOPHY
OF FRIEDRICH NIETZSCHE 1844-1900
2 Sessions | Friday | Oct 27, Nov 03 | 1:30-3:30PM
In-Person only | Hilton Head campus
Frederich Nietzsche (1844-1900) is one of the most widely
read philosophers in the Western tradition, in part be-
cause his writings are more literary, personal, an accessible
than most other philosophical works. Yet the interpreta-
tion of his work remains a tricky proposition, as
Nietzsche's life and his works abound with myth, contro-
versy, and melodrama. This course will touch upon
highlights of Nietzsche's philosophy providing a sense of
his philosophy and its relevance to Western society. No
academic coursework in philosophy is needed for this
OLLI class.

REL100: CONTINUITY OR CONFLICT -
THEPAPACIES OF JOHN PAUL,
BENEDICT, AND FRANCIS
2 Sessions | Friday | Oct 13, Oct 20 | 3-5PM
Zoom, OLLI Digital Library
The voice of the Roman Catholic Bishop of Rome
commonly referred to as the Pope, is of interest to more
than his fellow Catholics. A classic Latin formulation
asserts that a pope speaks "urbi et orbi"…to the city and
the world. This two-session course will explore how
writings on matters of social justice of three 21st century
popes represent a consistent message of harmony,
dialogue, and a search for the common good, despite
eorts in some quarters to nd serious divisions between
the three and cast their teachings into rival, and even
hostile camps. Interestingly, this eort to divide has
contemporary parallels in global and national political
discourse. Perhaps the writings of John Paul II, Benedict
XVI, and Francis deserve greater attention from the
world's prime ministers, presidents, and potentates.

REL102: THE CRUSADES
1 Session | Tuesday | Nov 07 | 3-5PM
Zoom, OLLI Digital Library
In November 1095, in the town of Clermont in central
France, Pope Urban II issued a call that sent an army of
armed Christian Europeans on a military journey to the
Middle East to free the Holy City of Jerusalem from
control by Muslim forces. This adventure would quickly
be called a "crusade" and in subsequent years would be
designated the First Crusade. Sadly, it would not be the
last. This course explores the history of these Crusades
over a period of three or more centuries. The Crusades
also represent a bipolar attitude continuing to this day as
the Western world continues to have diculty
developing a relationship with contemporary Islam.

SCI102: QUAKING, SHAKING EARTH…PLATE
TECTONICS, EARTHQUAKES, AND VOLCANOES
1 Session | Thursday | Nov 02 | 10:30AM-12:30PM
In-Person, Zoom, OLLI Digital Library | Hilton Head campus
Earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis - all can be explained
by the theory of plate tectonics. Learn about the
evidence to support this theory starting with the work of
Alfred Wegener and how he got it right but was ridiculed
in his day. See how others helped develop the idea of
shifting plates into the widely held theory of today. Plate
tectonic theory is a relatively new idea with plenty of data
to support it. This presentation will give you an appre-
ciation for the causes of geologic events on the earth.

1 Session | Friday | Nov 10 | 10-11:30AM
In-Person, Zoom, OLLI Digital Library | Bluton campus
I
nterest in Articial Intelligence (AI) has reached a fever
pitch in recent months, spurred in part by emerging
capabilities such as ChatGPT for composition and
conversation applications. Governments, including the
U.S. and the European Union, are moving to understand
and regulate such emerging AI capabilities. In this
session, OLLI members will (1) Review the approaches to
AI dominating the rst 50 years of this 75-year-old eld:
simulations of forms of human reasoning. (2) Examine the
more recent development and applications of "articial
neural networks" or "deep learning." Examples include
ChatGPT for composition and autopilot systems for
driving cars. (3) Explore the threats and promises
of AI applications. Some have suggested Articial
Intelligence represents an existential threat to humanity.
Others argue Articial Intelligence oers extraordinary
promise for go
od. We shall examine both perspectives,
along with currently envisioned approaches to the
regulation of AI and its applications.

OLLI annual memberships are nonrefundable. Class and additional supply fees if applicable are due at the time of registration.
PAO members are eligible to receive a credit* for class fees on their OLLI account to be used for future class enrollments if the
OLLI staff is notified before the start of class.
A $10 cancellation fee applies to all OLLI courses that have additional fees (supply/trip/tour fees). This fee is not applied against
the pay as you go course fee of $15. Both unlimited and pay as you go members will be assessed a $10 cancellation fee for
canceling a course that has an additional fee any time after enrollment into the class and registration payment. Any balance
remaining from the additional fee will be credited* to a member's OLLI account for future course enrollments. No credit is provided
if cancellation is less than 72 hours before the course. Full forfeiture also applies to those members who do not show up for an
enrolled course.
* OLLI credits are valid for one year.
