WHY TRANSFER TO DEPAUL?
There are many things to consider when you’re choosing
the university where you’ll complete your four-year degree:
reputation, available majors, costs, financial aid, location
and more. But one single factor can give you the edge: the
school’s commitment to transfer students.
That’s where our expertise comes in. DePaul welcomes
transfer students. We have a staff of admission counselors
who work with—and only with—transfer students, so
we know how to give you the support you need to make
a smooth transition.
At DePaul, you’ll gain a high quality, practical education
that balances academic knowledge with professional
preparation. You’ll get the personal attention you deserve.
After all, it’s easy for our professors—many of whom are
nationally or internationally known—to get to know you
when nearly all of our education classes have just 23 to
30 students. And, your personal network will include
DePaul’s 145,000 alumni, including more than 97,000 living
in the Chicago metropolitan area.
Best of all, you’ll get the value and prestige you want.
DePaul was named by Careers and Colleges as one of 12
colleges that offers a top education at less-than-Ivy-League
costs. And, DePaul’s College of Education is accredited by
the Illinois State Board of Education.
In short, DePaul can streamline your transition from
community college through a four-year degree to a
bright future.
DEPAUL’S COLLEGE OF EDUCATION
As a teacher, you must have the vision and confidence to
deliver meaningful instruction based on the needs of your
students, the subjects you are teaching and the community
in which you work. You’ll develop all these skills and more
at DePaul’s College of Education (COE).
Our curriculum is designed to meet both national standards
and the specific criteria required by the State of Illinois for
certification in the area you want to teach.
Professional educators in Chicago will tell you that COE
goes far beyond core requirements. COE is guided by
the Urban Professional Multicultural Educator conceptual
framework, preparing graduates to lead as well as serve in
complex urban environments. Our programs and curricula
are developed and supported by a carefully chosen array of
theories and research data, as well as experience with best
practices in the field.
That experience is enriched through the partnerships that
COE faculty and staff have forged with more than 150
institutions in the metropolitan area. Faculty members
consult with, provide professional training to, and lead
community-service projects for administrators, teachers and
counselors at a wide range of public, parochial and private
schools, and districts and educational bodies. Adding to
that knowledge are the experiences of our diverse student
body and the clientele they serve. At DePaul, students like
you are actively involved in learning, analyzing, discussing,
assessing and applying current theory in each field of study.
The result? Our graduates are recognized locally and
across the nation as well-prepared educators who
can change the lives of their students and the fortunes
of the communities in which they serve.
You’ll feel right at home transferring to DePaul University’s College of Education. You'll soon discover
that a large percentage of DePaul’s new undergraduates are transfer students like you. In fact, we
welcome more than 2,500 transfer students each year.

EDUCATION DEGREES
FOR TRANSFER STUDENTS
PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS
EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
This program prepares you to teach infants through third
grade in public and private elementary schools and childcare
centers. You can earn a Bachelor of Science through COE or
a Bachelor of Arts through a joint program between
Education and DePaul’s School for New Learning. Both
qualify you to apply for the Illinois Type 04 Certificate and
meet the requirements for Illinois Approval for Special
Education at the preschool level. The Bachelor of Science
degree entitles you to apply for ESL/Bilingual Endorsements.
ELEMENTARY EDUCATION
This Bachelor of Science degree prepares you to teach
children from kindergarten through ninth grade in public and
private elementary schools. In all cases, appropriate field
experience plays an integral role. The program qualifies you
for Type 03 teacher certification in grades K-9.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
The teaching concentration prepares you to teach at
elementary and secondary schools, while the sports and
fitness concentration prepares you to manage or develop
fitness and exercise programs in other settings. If you select
the teaching concentration, this Bachelor of Science program
qualifies you for Type 10 K-12 school certification.
SECONDARY EDUCATION
This program prepares you to teach at the high school level
in biology, chemistry, English, environmental science, history,
mathematics, physics, social sciences or visual arts. Content
area courses are completed through DePaul’s College of
Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and College of Science and
Health. You’ll earn a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science
degree depending on your subject area and will qualify for
Type 09 secondary school certification; you also may be
eligible to teach at the middle school level.
WORLD LANGUAGE EDUCATION
This program combines principles of education, pedagogy
and field work with an endorsement in Chinese, French,
German, Italian, Japanese or Spanish. Language courses are
completed through DePaul’s Department of Modern
Languages. The program leads to a Bachelor of Arts degree
and Type 10 (special) certification in grades K-12.
THE PATH TO TEACHER CERTIFICATION
Teacher candidates at DePaul go through three stages to
earn certification to teach in Illinois:
Step 1 Pre-Teacher Candidate: You’ll complete your general
education core curriculum or most of DePaul’s Liberal
Studies Program. You can take many of these classes at your
community college.
Step 2 Advanced Teacher Candidate: As an upperclassman,
you’ll complete the required courses in your major and pass
assessment tests in basic skills, your content area and
professional teaching. You’ll do most of this work at DePaul.
Step 3 Student Teacher: You’ll complete the student teaching
internship and the capstone course as a senior at DePaul.
STATE TESTS
To earn your state certification, you’ll need to pass several
assessments: The Illinois Test of Academic Proficiency (TAP),
the Assessment of Professional Teaching (APT) and the
content area test for your major. We suggest that you pass
the Test of Academic Proficiency before you transfer, if
possible. We provide comprehensive test preparation
for all of these assessments. For more information, go to
www.icts.nesinc.com.
ADVANCED STANDING
After you transfer, the next step is earning Advanced
Teacher Candidate status, also called Advanced Standing.
To do so, you must complete at least eight quarter hours
at DePaul, complete and pass EDU 025 Basic Technology
and earn a GPA of at least 2.5 on that course work. All
students, except those majoring in fitness management, must
pass the Illinois Test of Academic Proficiency. Finally, you must
submit a one-page petition to formally apply to become an
Advanced Teacher Candidate.
CAREER EXPLORATION
You’ll have many opportunities to explore the world of
teaching. You’ll have field experiences that will allow you to
network. You’ll develop contacts through COE faculty and
staff. And, DePaul’s Career Center holds an annual education
job fair, in addition to personalized services.

TRANSFERRING TO DEPAUL
We want the courses you take at your community college to
help you meet your graduation requirements at DePaul. You
will need to complete the general education requirements—
at DePaul they are known as liberal studies requirements—
along with the requirements in your major.
You have two options for completing the general education
requirements. If you transfer from a college that participates in
the Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI) you may follow the IAI
General Education Core Curriculum. Once at DePaul,
you’ll take
mission-based courses and the capstone course in your major.
Your other option is to choose courses that fulfill our liberal
studies requirements. Use our Web resources (see “Online
Tools”) to select courses that fulfill the requirements for
education majors.
ONLINE TOOLS
Use our online Transfer Center at go.depaul.edu/transfercenter
to see how your credits will transfer and select future courses.
The DePaul Transfer Course Lists website (go.depaul.edu/
transfercourses) shows the courses that have been
articulated, or matched, with DePaul courses and how these
courses will be accepted for credit in your intended major.
DePaul’s Dynamic Transfer Guides will show you all of the
courses at your community college which will fulfill current
degree requirements. Visit go.depaul.edu/transferguides.
The u.select Illinois system at go.depaul.edu/uselectillinois lets
you see how courses at your college are accepted at DePaul.
DAPP: THE DEPAUL ADMISSION PARTNERSHIP
PROGRAM
If you plan to complete your degree by starting at your
community college and transferring to DePaul, you should
join DAPP as soon as possible. DAPP will provide you with
confidence and clarity throughout your community college
career and as you transfer. Visit go.depaul.edu/DAPP.
TRANSFER LIMITS
DePaul is on a quarter system that requires 192 quarter credits
for graduation. A limit of 66 semester (99 quarter) credits can
transfer from any community college to DePaul. A limit of
88 semester (132 quarter) credits can transfer from a four-year
college. If you present more credits than can be transferred,
you may use the excess credits to demonstrate that you have
met certain requirements, but you will need to take additional
courses to earn enough credit for graduation.
TRANSFER COURSES FOR AN EDUCATION DEGREE
DePaul requires “U.S. History” and “Introduction to the
American Political System” as part of your education major.
Most community colleges offer these courses.
The following courses are commonly found at both community
and four-year colleges:
1. Introduction to Education: typically transfers to all five
programs.
2. Hu
man Development: select the courses that correlate to
the age level you hope to teach (for example, early
childhood human development, elementary age human
development, adolescent human development, etc.)
.
3. Educational Psychology: typically transfers to elementary
education and secondary education.
4. Mainstreaming Students with Disabilities: typically transfers
to elementary education and secondary education.
5. Math for Elementary Teachers 1 and 2: typically transfers
to elementary education.
6. Physical Education Activity Courses: typically transfers to
physical education (10 hours required).
ADMISSION INFORMATION
To transfer to COE, submit the admission application
and an
official transcript from every college/university attended.
If
you’ve earned fewer than 30 semester (44 quarter) hours of
transferable college work when you apply, you must provide
an official high school transcript and an ACT/SAT score
report. If you’ve completed 30 semester (45 quarter) college
credits or more, you must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 (based
on transferable credit). You must be in good academic
standing at the last college/university attended. Apply at
go.depaul.edu/apply.
COSTS AND FINANCIAL AID
You'll find tuition rates at go.depaul.edu/tuition. Seventy
percent of undergraduates receive some form of financial aid
or scholarships. Submit the Free Application for Federal
Student Aid (FAFSA) at fafsa.gov. To be considered for
scholarships, submit separate scholarship applications by the
stated deadlines: fall quarter—May 15; winter quarter—October
15; and spring quarter—January 15. Learn more at
