Academic Standards
Eligibility for the nursing major is dependent upon at least a C in each
of the specified math, biology and chemistry courses and a minimum
overall grade point average of 2.75. Admission is competitive and
usually requires above 3.0 overall GPA. Admission is based upon the
BSN Admission Ranking Formula in addition to the successful
completion of a pre-admission entrance exam. More information about
the pre-admission entrance exam is included in the College of Nursing
undergraduate application instructions. Instructions can also be found
on the ECU College of Nursing website.
Career Possibilities
Opportunities open to RNs are numerous. Although a large percent of
new graduates go to work in the traditional hospital setting, the fields
of nursing which include community health, school health,
occupational health, mental health, education, research, clinical
specialty, doctor’s office and clinical nursing are growing rapidly.
Application for Major
One hundred and thirty (130) students are admitted to the major each
semester. Applications must be filed in the College of Nursing by
February 1 for fall and September 1 for spring. Incomplete applications
will not be considered.

There will be additional costs for professional liability insurance,
books, criminal background checks, drug screening, supplies and
clinical/practicum courses.
Special Notes
All students enter the university as General College students
with an intended major of nursing. Upon admission to the
clinical courses, students may declare the major.
Any student who receives a degree from East Carolina
University must complete, in regular class attendance at East
Carolina University, a minimum of 30 semester hours and at
least one-half of the total hours in the major discipline.
The required resident study does not need to be accomplished
in consecutive semesters. One-half of the minimum semester
hours in the student’s program must be earned at a regionally
accredited senior college.
Transfer nursing credit is possible from other nationally
accredited nursing programs. One must be eligible to return to
one’s nursing program to be considered for admission.
Criminal background checks and drug screenings are required
prior to enrolling in nursing courses.
Please note that to be placed into Math 1065 students must
have a 570+ SAT Mathematics score or a 23+ ACT
Mathematics score.

The University

The College of Nursing
A collegiate program of nursing was established at East Carolina University in 1960. The BSN program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing

The purpose of the program is to educate students to become professional nurses and to assume leadership roles in a variety of settings. The American Nurses
Association and many other organizations recognize the baccalaureate degree as the requirement for entry into professional nursing. This professional program is
built upon liberal arts and the natural and behavioral sciences. General College requirements are offered in the first two years with the nursing concentration in the
junior and senior years. The program stresses the learning of concepts and principles, as well as the use of the nursing process in caring for individuals, families
and groups.
Clinical experiences are available in a variety of health care agencies including medical centers, hospitals, health departments, nursing and retirement homes and
in mental health centers. Students are responsible for their own transportation to clinical sites. Vidant Health Systems is the major teaching facility for ECU
College of Nursing, ECU College of Allied Health Sciences and the Brody School of Medicine at ECU. These resources provide students with opportunities for
applying their knowledge to all ages and many cultural groups.
Upon completion of the program, the graduate

Assembly for Men in Nursing, Multicultural Student Nurses Association, Nurses Christian Fellowship and Holistic Health Organization (H2O).
