Just after Christmas, my family and I headed to the furniture stores next to us to look at bunk beds. The mindset went that the boys would have more space to play in their room if they had a bunk bed and it made sense. Plus they were very excited about the idea. We didn't try to get bunk beds to be part
of our heritage - we just wanted sturdy, not ugly beds. I was amazed at how much the beds cost in the places we looked at - Bassett, Ramour and Flanagan, and Thomasville, for example. This immediately brought me back to the 1997 trip to Ethan Allen, when my wife and I were looking for acceptable
bookshelves. Ethan Allen wanted about $500 for such a thing and I beat the hasty retreat. Similarly, these outfits all like to sell very modest furniture at no modest prices, complete with sales that never end, and today's free shipping only offers, and a few other retail gambits that drive me crazy. When we
left the last of the shops, the kids were happy as always on the bunk bed and I was sure the internet could offer a better alternative. Of course, some googling quickly appeared all kinds of bunk bed stores online. Since our goal was very simple - sturdy, simple, not ugly, and wood - I realized that it could
work, and from the prices it was clear that we would save a few hundred dollars. We got the opportunity to buy Ethan's bed from SimplyBunkBeds.com, which is part of NetShops. I found a few complaints and frustrations about them online, but I found much more satisfied customers, so we read on the
bed, reviewed the instructions for assembling online, and ordered one, along with a trundle bed to go under it. He arrived more than a week before he was due (although the trundle remains back ordered) and he appeared in three heavy boxes. Some reviews of the bed indicated that the assembly was
time-consuming, so instead of starting it in the evening, I waited for Saturday morning. Demolition of boys' rooms, vacuuming dust of rabbits, and collecting toys and garbage from under the bed took longer than it should have been, in part because housework can be slower with children's help. However,
we cleaned the workspace and brought the pieces upstairs. The directions were adequate - not great, but adequate. I found that one adult could make almost the entire bed alone, although having my seven and five years to spend a few things was helpful. Where it did require two people was - not
surprisingly - when we had to bunk the top bed on the lower bed. The other part of the two people, which was a surprise, was when we were screwing the slats down between the buffets. The buffets were both bowed, and so we needed one man to press the buffet at that as the others drove into the
screws to keep it all together. Also, it was really very easy. The kids thought it was a lot of fun watching the bed go along, and since I I aware, going into it, that it would take a couple of hours, we didn't start work at 4pm. This adventure in online shopping showed me once again why retail has a huge
