SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM:

Spanish - Second Sunday of each month at 2:30 p.m.

English - Fourth Saturday of each month at 11:30 a.m.

Parents must register by calling the Rectory at least one month in advance. Baptism Instruction held the

week before the Baptism. Proposed godparent/s need to be living in accordance to the teachings of the

Catholic Church and received the Sacrament of Confirmation, and are asked to attend the Baptism

Instruction along with the child’s parents.

SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE:

The couple should contact a parish priest or deacon one year before the desired date for the marriage to

ensure proper preparation for the Sacrament. Couples are not to make FIRM plans for the reception PRIOR to

speaking with a parish priest or deacon.

SACRAMENTS FOR THE SICK/HOMEBOUND:

Anointing of the Sick: Anytime upon request in the home of the sick. If the infirm person is in hospital, please ask

nurse to contact the Hospital Chaplain first.

Holy Communion: A Priest, Deacon or Eucharistic Minister of the parish will bring Holy Communion to those

parishioners confined to their home. Please notify the Rectory when someone is ill. Most area hospitals have

full-time priest-chaplains, who can be contacted via the nurses.

MIRACULOUS MEDAL NOVENA:

Monday after the 8:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Masses.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

LENTEN SEASON BECKONS - The Holy Season of Lent will begin this week, as the Church observes Ash

Wednesday. This is a day when Catholics “come out of the woodwork,” especially those who for some rea-

son or another have moved away from the Church but are now discovering the richness and the beauty of

life within the Christian community. For this reason, several Masses will be celebrated on Wednesday at

St. Peter’s: 8:30am, 12Noon, 3:30pm, 6:00pm, 7:00pm in Vietnamese (Convent) and 7:30pm in Spanish.

In the coming days and weeks, we are all encouraged to seek ways to beef up our spiritual life. On our par-

ish website, for example, we have a section called “Nearby Events” which lists opportunities for spiritual

growth being oered at nearby parishes. In the meantime, we encourage you to consider the following:

− Make sure to attend Sunday Mass every Sunday this Lent, no matter what other commitments come

your way (yes, every Sunday!)

− Consider attending daily Mass or one of the devotions (such as the Friday Stations of the Cross,

Monthly Holy Hour, Children’s Holy Hour …).

− Familiarize yourself with the Church’s guidelines on Fasting and Abstinence

(found on Page Six of

this bulletin).

Even though fasting is mandated only on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, we are

still called to abstain from meat on all Fridays of Lent (and since all Fridays of the year are considered

Days of Penance, many people practice abstinence from meat every Friday of the year – a very com-

mendable practice).

− It is written in Scripture, “Store up almsgiving in your treasury, and it will save you from every evil. it

will ght for you against the enemy”

(Sirach 29, 12).

Think of some cause (or causes) that you wish

assist through your means this Lent. We might want to consider the Annual Appeal of the Archdio-

cese (which kicked-o this week, and which is helping a myriad of Church ministries that benet pri-

mary the least of God’s people).

VISITATION BY BISHOP CRUZ – On Monday we were happy to have Bishop Ma-

nuel A. Cruz back among us, as he completed a Parish Visitation at St. Peter’s. His day

included an extended visitation to St. Peter’s School. He met all the students and

teachers by visiting every classroom and also met with the School Principal. Bishop

Cruz – the Regional Bishop for Essex County – was thrilled by what he saw, especially

by the “family spirit” he witnessed and the respectfulness of the students.

Bishop Manny also had a long meeting with the members of the Parish Finance and

Pastoral Councils. He showed a real interest in each of the members present and lis-

tened to their recommendations for the future of the parish. It was a real moment of

communion. This spilled-over in the celebration of Holy Mass

in the evening, which concluded with a sumptuous reception

that parishioners graciously put together.

We are now in the process of presenting a nal report about the

visit, which will include the suggestions and comments that pa-

rishioners shared with the bishop over the two days of the Par-

ish Visitation. This was a moment of grace for our parish, and I

wish to thank Bishop Manny for the vitali-

ty and enthusiasm that he shared with us.

After Sunday’s prayer of the Angelus,

Pope Francis expressed his sadness

upon receiving news from Nicaragua. “I

cannot but remember with concern Bish-

Bishop Manuel Cruz this past

week as part of his visit to the

parish. Bishop Cruz met our

students and staff speaking to

each class even to our littlest

angels in Pre-K. We were hon-

ored to have Bishop Cruz

spend several hours at St. Pe-

ter’s School and we truly thank him for sharing this

time with us.

2023 LENTEN REGULATIONS

1. The days of both Fast and Abstinence during Lent are

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. If possible, the fast

on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy

Saturday night) as the “paschal fast” to honor the suffer-

ing and death of the Lord Jesus, and prepare ourselves to

share more fully and to celebrate more readily His Resur-

rection. The other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence.

On a day of Fast, only one (1) full meal is permitted, and

two (2) smaller meals, which, if added together, would

not exceed the main meal in quantity. Those between

the ages of 18 and 59 are obligated to fast.

On a day of Abstinence (Fridays) no meat, may be eaten.

Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the

law of abstinence.

2. The obligation to observe the laws of Fast and Abstinence

“substantially”, or as a whole, is a serious obligation.

3. The Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are designated

as days of penance, but each individual may substitute for

the traditional abstinence from meat some other practice

of voluntary self-denial as penance.

4. The time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept (Easter Duty*)

extends from the First Sunday of Lent, February 26,

2023 to The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, June

4, 2023

* Canon 921, 1. All faithful, after they have been initiated

into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation

of receiving Communion at least once a year.
