Willow Creek Battle of the Books
Battle of the Books Literacy Club is returning to Willow Creek for 4th and 5th grade students
during the 24-25 school year. Battle of the Books Literacy Club is designed to encourage
elementary students to:
Read quality literature.
Read in their leisure time.
Read for information as well as pleasure.
Club is a fit for students who already love reading. Ability of the reader can range but a
desire to read, and read lots, is required. By choosing to participate in this new club, your child
will be introduced to a variety of fiction and non-fiction books. Reading instruction will not
take place.
Fourth and fifth grade students are given the opportunity to participate in the Battle of the
Books Literacy Club. Students read at least seven titles from the following book list. Many of
the books are award-winning pieces of literature. Public libraries have copies of the books for
check out over the summer. Students are highly encouraged to begin reading the titles over
summer. WCE library will have copies of the books during the 24-25 school year.
Students will participate in book club study sessions supervised by Ms. Tokarchik and
Ms. Arnold. During book club study sessions, participating students will work collaboratively to
discuss the books and respond to questions about plot, characters, setting and theme. Regular
attendance at Battle of the Books Literacy Club will be required so that teams can maximize
their time together. Students in Battle of the Books should plan to make this club a priority. This
means that if a student wants to participate in another club/activity, it should not conflict with
Battle of the Books. Battle of the Books will meet on specific Mondays from 2:45-3:30 p.m.
Dates to be released in late August/earlySeptember.
At the end of the book club study sessions, all student teams regardless of grade level will
compete against one another at the Willow Creek Battle of the Books competition. The top
performing team at the Willow Creek Battle of the Books competition will compete in the
CCSD’s Battle of the Books semi-final competitions, and possibly district final competition,
against students from other Cherry Creek elementary schools.
