Registration service for births, deaths and marriages
When a death occurs it must be registered within five days, by the Registrar of Births and
Deaths for the area in which it occurred.
We have listed below the names, addresses and contact numbers of registration offices for
your assistance.
The registration service operates an appointment system; please telephone the
appropriate office to book an appointment. You also need to check whether only you need
to go along. It may be that someone other than you will need to give information for the
death to be registered. If the death has been referred to the coroner, it cannot be
registered until the registrar has received authority from the coroner to do so.

The purchase of the Exclusive Right of burial to a grave space includes the right to erect a
memorial at the head of the grave. Please note this is subject to the authority’s memorial
regulations included in the policy for erection of Memorials and Memorial Safety.
Memorials remain the responsibility of the grave owners. If we notice an unsafe memorial,
we will endeavor to contact the grave owner to arrange repair. Should any visitors notice
an unsafe memorial, please advise a member of staff or ring the office contact numbers as
soon as possible.
All headstones/inscriptions are to be carried out by an approved monumental mason.
Approved monumental masons
The following is a list of Approved Monumental Masons whom have agreed to register with
Eastleigh Borough Council, and have agreed to work in accordance with our code of
working practice. This is based on recommendations set out by the National Association of
Memorial Masons to ensure safe fixing methods are used.
This list is for your guidance only. You are advised to make your own enquiries before
making a decision as to which company undertakes the work.
Any memorial mason wishing to be registered to work within the Borough should contact
the Cemetery Service office to request an application form.

The main requirements
in England and Wales are that the death is
certified
by a
doctor
or
c
oro

registered with a Registrar of
Births, Deaths
& Marriages, and the body either
buried or cremated.
• You do not have to have a funeral ceremony
• You do not have to use a religious minister
• You do not have to use a funeral director
• A ceremony does not have to take place in a crematorium or place of worship
There are more options concerning the content of a funeral ceremony and its duration than
many people realise.
The majority of people choose to make their arrangements through a funeral director.
However some people see 'do-it-yourself' funerals as more personal and less
expensive. If this approach appeals, and you have time to research and prepare,
contact us for guidance.
You can also get information from the Natural Death Centre. Some funeral directors
are willing to help with such funerals.

Director
Funeral directors will manage funeral arrangements and give advice and support.

the funeral director you choose belongs to a trade association. This

Please contact the Cemetery Office and if your complaint is then not resolved to your
satisfaction it will be dealt with under the Authority's Official Complaints Procedure.
b) About the Service Provided by a Funeral Director
Most funerals are conducted well, but if you have a justified complaint, you should
contact your funeral director. If you are not satisfied with the response, you can
complain to whichever of the three trade associations listed below your funeral director
belongs to:
- The National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD)
- The National Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors (SAIF)
Please direct any complaints to either of the authorities listed above. Advice may also
be obtained from your local trading standards department.
