THINKBEFOREYOUSPEAK
Alwaysspeakdirectlytothepersonwithadisability,nottohiscompanion,aideorsignlanguageinterpreter.
Don’tapologizeifyouuseanexpressionsuchas“Igottarun”or“Seeyoulater”thatrelatestotheperson’s
disability.Theseexpressionsarepartofeverydaylanguage
anditislikelytheapologywillbemoreoffensive
thantheexpression.

Peoplewithdisabilitiesarethebestjudgeofwhattheycanorcannotdo.Don’tmakedecisionsforthem
aboutparticipatinginanyactivity.
TerminologyTips
o Use“PeopleFirst”Languagerefertotheindividualfirst,thentohisorherdisability,whenitis
relevantandappropriate.Say“personwithadisability” ratherthan“disabledperson”orusethe
followingformula:
